A cheap stay in Berlin doesn't automatically mean out in the sticks. Spandau, Marzahn-Hellersdorf and a few corners of Neukölln have very inexpensive 3-star hotels with direct S- and U-Bahn links. Anyone aiming to stay under €80 will find something here.
A cheap stay in Berlin does not automatically mean living far out. Thanks to the dense S- and U-Bahn network, a room in Spandau, Marzahn or on the edge of Neukölln still brings you into the centre in 20 to 30 minutes. Under 80 euros a night buys solid three-star houses, clean budget chains and, in the low season, genuine bargains.
What matters when saving is the distance to the nearest train station, not the straight-line distance to Brandenburg Gate. A hotel "only" six kilometres from the centre can be better connected than one that lies closer but far from any U-Bahn. Count breakfast separately - many budget houses offer it as an option, and a bakery round the corner is often cheaper. Weekend rates usually sit below those of trade-fair weeks.
